Pete Greening : Le choc de l'Op Art ...

R-6038568-1409487077-1295

Translate by google :

Pete Greening, born in 1954, lives and works in the United Kingdom.

Overview on facebook, then via some more or less well identified, titled and captioned visuals found on online sales sites, I wanted to give a slightly superficial but documented account of the work of the Artist PETE GREENING.

The translations from French to English and vice versa by "google translations" being a bit gregarious and not seizing all the salt of the turns of our rich and beautiful French language; I will have to try to formulate short sentences with simple words ...

Of course, I would very much like to see PETE's paintings, appreciate the quality (which I imagine as neutral as possible) and the texture (which most often seems to be acrylic on canvas) ...

Also appreciate the formats, the physical presence, in different light ...

We are touching the limits of our screens and all this digital hardware for us often wrongly sells us for "real" or even a so-called "virtual reality" ... But it is not the subjects and the colored structures of PETE GREENING are powerful enough that we can talk about them a bit ...:

I chose to write and document this little article on this artist whose practice seems to me the opposite of mine but sometimes with some bridges in particular in the almost systematic use of evolutionary / repetitive structures based on simple assaz arithmetic calculations. .

The opposite of my practice; Because for my part, my lines are used most often as a vector of gestures and that refusing any "coloring" in my work, the gesture, "brush stroke", touches or imprint must be the "color-form" or the "shape-colors-movement" given there with a single gesture ...

For me, the effects of illusionistic and optical expectations are often either accidental, sometimes avoided or even treated with indifference ...

I only rarely publish editions, prints and derivative products preferring to detach myself from the originals (sometimes regrettably ...) ...

I don't always know how the painted adventure will end, which often involves a bit of unexpected and improvisation and rarely the simple shaping of an "idea" ... Also my paintings may have to do also parofis with the "dream catchers" of totemist peoples ... What I would not dare say Greening's paintings in his place because I do not know if he asked himself this question ...

With regard to Pete Greening's work, the problem is posed in a different, almost opposite way: Pete Grenning situates a lot in advance of the painting he is going to produce, drew the plans, evaluated the colorimetries of gradients , provided the colored harmonies of shades, tones, chromatic gradations and does not use masks or stencils (which sometimes happens to me to use them but assaz rarely also ...).

GREENING evokes the visual chaos received by "Op Art" and in particular by the works of Bridjet Riley and also Victor Vasarely ... From what he writes, Pete Greening does not seem to be too interested in the procedures and political visions of these artists and seems more interested in structures based on arithmetic rhythms which are quite basic at times and more sofficial by other places, often centered and almost always evolving (progression / regressions ... evolutions) ...

Its interpretation with colors is interested, or rather is confined first and foremost in colored harmonies with neighborhoods of colors in tones and shades close together with however some exceptions to contrasting harmonies more or less attenuated and much more rarely complementary contrasts.

Thus the spectator does not find himself attacked but rather bathed in a soft abstract, structured, colored harmonies and sometimes some figurative allusions but never direct, almost one could say in a "symbolic" or even "metaphorical" way ... (I do not find not the right word ...).

Pete Greening has practiced an amateur practice probably for many years alongside a job in the public service, then once retirement age arrived, he began to show the works thus painted and accumulated over time. ..

The work of Pete Greening initially attracted by figuration, seems in what is shown to be abstract and homogeneous.

(while mine is freer although rigorous and more heterogeneous ... If we have to continue the comparison) ...

We are both often looking for movement and colored dynamics using evolving structures ... which brings us together but also distances us from the approach and implementation ...

Pete Greening, through his work has been able to renew forms and in an almost contemporary continuity of his influences: The Op Art and Kinetic Art movements see minimalist (I also think there of Sol Lewitt and some others ...) ... And by are colorful interpretation brings us colorful harmony that we guess sensual and also it must be said decorative (which is not at all in my mind a pejorative notion quite the contrary) ...

For me, a work to be beautiful must if possible be intelligent and retinal, see as decorative as much as expressive and the painting Pete Greening largely meet these conditions. What also makes P.Greening's painting "modern" is that it is part of a historical continuity "the modus" of "modern": What does the link between a recent past and also looks to the future ...

This future could possibly be found with other artists in off-center compositions that have twisted the neck to symmetry, but that's another story ...

Pete’s only formal art education was up to the first year of art ‘A’ Level in the 1970/71 academic year, which he only did thinking it would be a skive. Towards the end of that academic year, he discovered the mid to late ‘60s works of Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, and was inspired to start painting geometric abstract paintings. Sadly the new found enthusiasm didn’t come soon enough to stop him being asked to leave the educational establishment he was at, and he found himself starting work in late 1971 as a civil servant, while continuing to paint as a hobby.

Time flew by, and paintings stacked up, and he eventually had a joint exhibition with an old school friend in The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead in March 1980.

A further exhibition was also held with the same friend in November / December 1982 in what was then the Dower House Gallery at 108 High St, Berkhamsted.

Since then he has had many solo exhibitions and has exhibited in many group shows, including at London’s Brick Lane Gallery and the Royal Academy Summer Show. He is also represented in Belgium by The Nicholson Art Gallery in Brussels

His paintings explore the optical effects of linear distortion and arithmetical progression. The patterns and colours used are carefully selected to create either an optical illusion of movement, or to create a feeling of tension on the surface of the painting.

Some paintings have been used as covers for the first seven LPs in a series of limited edition 12’’ vinyl LPs by the German record label Drone Records as well as other releases – see https://www.discogs.com/artist/2585331-Pete-Greening

Hello ... My adress mail : fouchard.of@gmail.com

If you want send me a few words and picture about your work, i would like to write about your work on my blog... It' free for pleasure and funny activity...

Good stuff! I'm going to email you shortly 🙂
OK...
just sent it 🙂

Hi 🙂
Hi .
Hi . For the article on the blog: the work is in progress, I have to manage to assemble my words ... In text ... For the moment, I just copied and pasted

🙂

yes, that's fine but do let me know if you want me to explain anything in more detail

that's not my french, but from google translate so hope it's correct 🙂
Yes I want you to tell me a little about it because I already have my little idea about your work but also your testimonies will be precious ...
ask whatever you want

Tell me about your background and in particular your attraction (in addition to the graphic structure) to someone like Vasarely who, under a vaguely left mask, claimed among other things to be a hegemony of over-representation in public space and who in reality s turned out to be a very right-wing man with mercantile ambitions and a bit matchist or even patriarchal ... This is found in your home in particular by the marketing of derivative products ... While Bridjet Rilley, it is a much more important work that m held immensely visually while at Vasarely there is a desire to seduce which you do not know how to save ...

Also tell me about your work on colors which, without being a search for tone on tone, is looking for a chromatic neighborhood which seems to banish the too easy or obvious contrasts in favor of harmony which I also find in Anuszkiewicz from 1954 to 1986 around. ..

🤔😒😶

hmmm. That will take a while to tthink about and reply to, so i'll do it by email if that's ok

Ok
You write me and send it by mail if you like... Ok...🙂

07:20
i've emailed you just now 🙂

forgot to say in my email - i don't use masking of any kind when painting - all done by hand, very occasionally i use a ruling pen to neaten edges

Hi

You asked for some more details. The translation of what you are asking doesn’t always make sense but I’ll try to guess what you mean!

I’m 65 years old, born in 1954. I wasn’t very interested in art at school – it was all landscapes, portraits and still lifes, which didn’t really interest me that much - but I must have been judged to be ok at it as I was allowed to include it as a subject to study for my ‘A levels’ (examinations which are taken at age 17/18 after a course lasting 2 years). However I was rather …. hedonistic … at the time and only finished the first year of that course before dropping out in the summer of 1970. Just before dropping out I discovered the work of Vasarely and Riley, among other artists in a book about Op Art. Op Art was a fairly new movement at the time, and it was their work that started me painting geometric abstract paintings for my own enjoyment.

I wasn’t aware of any political affiliations or ideas of any artists, just ‘wowed’ by the optical effects in their works, and I think that in that respect, Vasarely and Riley were joint equals at the top of the Op Art ladder.

Since then, painting had been a hobby while I had a career as a civil servant, and I just showed paintings in group shows. Then in 2010, knowing that I would be retiring from work in a few years time, I started applying to galleries for solo shows and have had quite a few since then, in local galleries. One gallery that I had shown at twice before moved to new premises, and asked me to provide the paintings for their inaugural show at the new location, which I thought was quite a compliment! I have exhibited at that same gallery several times since, and had my most recent planned exhibition there cancelled because of the virus - it was due to start on 6th April for 3 weeks.

I usually have the idea for the completed painting in my head, and I work quite instinctively, sometimes only jotting down a few notes or arithmetical calculations about a painting I’m thinking of doing, and rarely doing studies but instead just starting to measure and draw up the actual painting with the idea only in my head. Sometimes, while working on a painting I will think of variations on the same theme.

I then mix the paint into the required number of tints, and write the appropriate number in the area of the painting where it is to go, and after that it’s just like ‘painting by numbers’!

Many of my recent paintings are monochromes, all painted in different tints of the same colour. In this respect, the actual colours don’t matter – it’s the gradation of colour in the painting that cause the effect, so a brown painting could just as easily have been painted in blue, or red, or green. Some paintings are just patterns, others have backgrounds and foregrounds where I like having medium-toned backgrounds with the foreground shapes graduating from darker than the background to lighter than the background.

I had heard of Anuszkiewicz but wasn’t really familiar with his work, but I’ve googled him and see that some of my work follows some of the same ideas – I might even adapt a few of his ideas, so thank you for pointing him out to me!

I hope this is OK for your purposes, but feel free to ask for more information on any particular point

Pete

TRANSLATION BY GOOGLE :

salut
